Settimana Santa

I riti della Settimana Santa di Taranto sono un evento che si svolge nella città a partire dalla Domenica delle Palme.

I riti della Settimana Santa risalgono all'epoca della dominazione spagnola nell'Italia meridionale. Furono introdotti a Taranto dal patrizio tarantino Don Diego Calò, il quale nel 1603, fece costruire a Napoli le statue del Gesù Morto e dell'Addolorata.

Nel 1765 il patrizio tarantino Francesco Antonio Calò, erede e custode della tradizione della processione dei Misteri del Venerdì Santo, donò alla Confraternita del Carmine le due statue che componevano la suddetta processione, attribuendole l'onore e l'onere di organizzare e perpetrare quella tradizione cominciata circa un secolo prima.

The “Pugliesi” people: absolutlely delightful and extremely helpful

Architecture: the ancient trulli dotted around the Alberobello and the awesome baroque architecture of Lecce

What do you NOT LIKE about Puglia? difficult to find anything negative, but perhaps some of the Italian drivers

Any IDEAS to improve the infrastrutture for the turism? railways could be improved

What should visitors BRING with them when they come to Puglia? a corkscrew is a ‘must’

Your favourite restaurant? Taverna della Gelosia, Ostuni

Anything you would like to add? I have wanted to visit this region of Italy for many years and now I am here, it hasn’t disappointed, it’s unspoilt, the people are lovely and we look forward to returning again soon, thank you.

Savelletri

The little holiday resort and fishing village of Savelletri (pop. approximately 700) is a locality of Fasano and is situated less than 5 miles east of the town (about 15 minutes drive) on the Adriatic Coast of Puglia.

There is a nice esplanade there with restaurants and bars for visitors, some with wonderful vistas over the marina and or blue sea. You can stroll around the harbour area to admire the pleasure and fishing boats or just grab a glass of wine or "gelato" and sit in the sun. Swimming and sunbathing areas can be found everywhere up and down this part of the coast, just park up where you can find a spot or visit one of the local lidos where you can hire sun beds, parasols and have a bar with snacks on hand.
